West Hartford, CT — The 100 Young Men of Color initiative, designed to elevate and empower the next generation, hosted a pre-conference workshop at Men’s Warehouse that equipped students with practical skills and a vision for their future.
According to Sean Allen Sr., founder of the Equity Enrichment Alliance, “We are doing a workshop for some of the young gentlemen that are being honored at the first 100 Young Men of Color event at Southern Connecticut State University.” The workshop precedes the GEM Conference—short for Generationally Enhancing Males—scheduled for May 9 at SCSU.
The session provided formalwear fittings and lessons on professional presence, including how to tie a tie, properly introduce oneself, and speak with confidence. “I’ve learned so far how to tie a tie, how to introduce yourself properly and professionally,” said eighth grader Colwin Pace.
Another nominee, eighth grader Timothy Ferguson, said, “What stood out to me was them, you know, helping us how to look formal, what to say, what to do, how to how to present ourselves.”
Two hundred young men were nominated from across Connecticut, with the list narrowed to 100 based on their character and aspirations. The event and preparation are part of a broader push to build leadership and self-esteem in young men of color.
“We wanted to show them that they’re valued; they’re being celebrated for being a young man of color and being a very vital part of their communities,” said Allen.
Allen, a firefighter of 17 years, told attendees: “We can’t just stay in one lane,” emphasizing that his own journey—from emergency calls to public service—shaped his view on manhood. “Firefighting has changed my life,” he said. “You know, I’ve saved lives, I’ve delivered babies, I’ve done CPR, I’ve done all types of aspects within that realm, but it’s also taught me how to be a man.”
The hands-on workshop marks a formative moment for many of the students.
For some, it was the first time being fitted for a suit or learning how to tie a tie—practical experiences that symbolize a rite of passage.
As the young nominees prepare to gather at the GEM Conference in New Haven, they move forward not only with new skills but also with new connections. “It feels good, I’m glad to have the opportunity,” said Pace.
The 100 Young Men of Color Awards and GEM Conference will take place on May 9 at Southern Connecticut State University.
