BRIDGEPORT, CT — Bridgeport Animal Control is hosting a Free the Shelter event on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 236 Evergreen Street. This initiative, in collaboration with the Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals, offers free pet adoptions to help alleviate the shelter’s full capacity.
Chief Animal Control Officer Jennifer Merenda highlighted the event’s success, stating, “This event is one of our more popular ones. It’s very successful.” All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped at no cost to adopters, services typically valued at around $80.
No appointments are necessary; animal experts will assist attendees through the application process. However, new pets will not go home the same day as adoption. Prospective adopters should bring proof of homeownership or a notarized letter from their landlord, any current dogs in the home for a meet-and-greet, and any children under 13 for a meet-and-greet.
Merenda emphasized the transformative impact of pet adoption, noting, “A pet really opens your life up. If you open your life up to them, you’ll reap the rewards.”
