NEWINGTON, CT — Cleanup efforts are underway after a fuel tanker spilled an estimated 500 to 1,000 gallons of fuel during a delivery at a Citgo gas station on the Berlin Turnpike Tuesday morning.
According to firefighters, the spill occurred during the offload process while the tanker was refueling the station. The incident prompted a rapid response from emergency personnel, including the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), which was requested to evaluate environmental impact.
“DEEP assessed the areas of concern,” officials said. Cleanup crews were deployed to mitigate the spill and prevent further environmental harm.
No injuries were reported. The Berlin Turnpike was temporarily closed near Kitts Lane as a precaution but was later reopened.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of the spill, and environmental crews remain on-site as containment and remediation continue.
