Windsor, CT – A man is in custody after stealing a Windsor Fire vehicle and attempting to stop other vehicles on Interstate 91 in Massachusetts. The incident unfolded late Saturday evening, leading to multiple crashes and two hospitalizations.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the suspect, whose identity has not been released, commandeered the department’s fire vehicle in Windsor, Connecticut, and drove it north into Massachusetts. Witnesses reported that the man was erratically stopping the fire vehicle in live traffic lanes near Springfield, attempting to halt passing cars.

The chaos resulted in several accidents, with two individuals requiring medical attention at a nearby hospital. Their conditions have not been disclosed, but authorities confirmed that no fatalities occurred.

State police, working in coordination with local law enforcement, managed to stop the fire vehicle and arrest the suspect. All lanes on I-91 have since reopened, and traffic flow has returned to normal.

The Windsor Fire Department expressed gratitude to first responders who resolved the situation and emphasized that they would cooperate fully with the investigation.

Authorities are still determining the motive behind the theft and erratic behavior. Charges are expected to include vehicle theft, reckless endangerment, and obstruction of traffic.

This incident marks a rare breach of public safety involving an emergency vehicle. Massachusetts State Police urge witnesses or anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
