Bridgeport, CT – January 18, 2025

A suspect in the Bridgeport fatal shooting incident that claimed the life of a man in Bridgeport is now in custody, police confirmed early Sunday. The incident, which occurred on January 16 in the area of Stratford Avenue, had prompted an intensive search by local authorities.

Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter announced that the suspect, whose name has not yet been disclosed, was apprehended late Saturday evening following tips from community members. “This arrest brings a critical step forward in delivering justice for the victim and his family,” Chief Porter said during a press briefing.

Details of the Incident

According to the police report, the victim, a 34-year-old Bridgeport resident, was found with multiple gunshot wounds on Stratford Avenue near its intersection with East Main Street. Emergency responders transported him to Bridgeport Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute between the victim and the suspect. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots around 9:30 p.m., followed by a vehicle fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses reportedly helped identify the suspect.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The fatal shooting has reignited concerns among Bridgeport residents about gun violence in the city. Community activist Maria Hernandez called for increased police presence and outreach programs. “We need to address the root causes of this violence, or it will continue to happen,” Hernandez said.

In response, city officials have pledged to enhance safety measures in the area. Mayor Joe Ganim reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling violent crime, highlighting ongoing partnerships with state and federal agencies.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The suspect is expected to be arraigned at Bridgeport Superior Court on Monday, facing charges including first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether additional suspects or accomplices were involved.

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Police are urging anyone with further information about the shooting to contact the Bridgeport Police Department’s confidential tip line at 203-576-TIPS.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, city leaders and law enforcement are working to restore a sense of security. The investigation remains active, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
