Police Seek Suspect in Westport Gas Station Car Theft

Westport police are actively searching for a suspect who stole a car while its driver was refueling at Westport gas station on Post Road East. The incident highlights a troubling trend of vehicle thefts at gas stations in the area and has prompted renewed warnings from law enforcement.

The theft occurred at the Exxon gas station located at 1510 Post Road East. According to police reports, the driver had exited the vehicle to pump gas, leaving the car momentarily unattended. In that brief window, an unidentified individual entered the vehicle and drove off. The make and model of the stolen car have not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Similar Incidents Raise Safety Concerns

This is not the first time a theft has occurred at the same gas station. In February 2021, a 2019 Honda Pilot was stolen under similar circumstances. Westport police located that vehicle shortly after the theft, but the suspect, a 14-year-old driver, tragically died after a high-speed crash in Fairfield.

The recurring nature of these crimes has raised concerns among Westport residents and law enforcement officials alike. Police are urging drivers to take simple but critical precautions, such as locking their vehicles and turning off the engine while refueling.

Police Urge Public Vigilance

In light of these incidents, the Westport Police Department is increasing patrols around gas stations and other vulnerable areas. They have also released safety reminders to the public, emphasizing the importance of situational awareness.

“We understand that many people may feel a false sense of security while at a gas station, but these crimes occur in mere seconds”… “We’re asking everyone to remain vigilant and to never leave their vehicle running or unlocked, even for a moment.”

said an officer

Anyone with information about the recent theft is encouraged to contact the Westport Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through the department’s website.

As police continue to investigate, residents of Westport are reminded to prioritize safety and secure their vehicles while refueling. Vehicle thefts at gas stations are a growing concern, and proactive measures can help prevent similar incidents in the future.
