NEW HAVEN, CT — Police have identified the woman found dead Friday evening in Evergreen Cemetery as 35-year-old Naysha Mendez. According to officials, Mendez was discovered on a dirt path near the crematorium just before 8 p.m.
A person walking their dog came across the body and contacted authorities, police said.
Chief Karl Jacobson confirmed the death is being treated as a homicide. “Mendez suffered a significant number of wounds,” Jacobson stated, but declined to elaborate on the nature of the injuries. He said there is no indication of a broader threat to the public and described the case as an isolated incident.
Mendez was a resident of the Hill neighborhood in New Haven, according to police. Her family is cooperating with investigators.
Detectives have gathered a substantial amount of evidence from the scene. “The investigation is progressing rapidly,” police said in a statement.
No suspects or arrests have been announced.
