NEW BRITAIN, CT — A New Britain man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for fatally striking a Connecticut State Trooper while under the influence during a highway traffic stop in Southington last year.
Alex Oyola-Sanchez, 42, was sentenced Monday in Hartford Superior Court for the death of Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier, who was killed in the line of duty on Interstate 84 in May 2024. According to prosecutors, Oyola-Sanchez was impaired by fentanyl and other narcotics when his vehicle veered into Pelletier during a traffic enforcement stop.
The courtroom was packed with state police officers and Pelletier’s family, who delivered emotional victim impact statements. Pelletier, a decorated 8-year veteran of the Connecticut State Police, was remembered as a dedicated officer and devoted father of two.
“This wasn’t an accident—it was an avoidable tragedy caused by someone who chose to drive under the influence”
said Chief State’s Attorney Patrick Griffin during the sentencing.
Dashcam footage and toxicology reports played a key role in the case, which led Oyola-Sanchez to plead guilty to manslaughter and operating under the influence. In addition to prison time, he will face five years of special parole and a permanent license revocation.
Following the sentencing, Connecticut State Police issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to highway safety and honoring Pelletier’s service. A section of I-84 near Exit 30 has been designated in his memory.
The sentencing marks a grim reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily on Connecticut roads. Pelletier’s legacy continues to resonate among colleagues, community members, and his grieving family.
