Hartford, CT — Scammers posing as law enforcement are targeting Connecticut residents, using fear tactics and a faked police number to steal personal information.

The Central District Major Crime (CDMC) Headquarters has fielded multiple complaints from people receiving calls from men claiming to be officers with the Connecticut State Police (CSP) or the U.S. Marshal Service.

The callers, speaking with heavy accents, insist the victims are under investigation for “money laundering” and demand personal details.

“These calls are NOT from the Connecticut State Police,” authorities said, warning that criminals are using caller ID spoofing to make it seem like the calls come from CDMC’s main line, 860-706-5652.

Officials stress that law enforcement will never request money or private information over the phone.

Police urge residents to hang up immediately if they receive one of these calls. Victims should never engage, provide information, or make payments.

To confirm legitimacy, officials recommend calling the organization directly using a publicly listed number. Suspicious calls should be reported to 911.

Authorities continue investigating the scam, but they emphasize that public awareness is key.

“If you get a call like this, don’t panic, don’t talk—just hang up,” police advised.
